Could we perhaps sum these people up as "I don't have anything to offer the world, therefore I'll create a little crusade in my mind to rationalize destroying it?"
That's not so unusual. You see all sorts of materials being used as improvised fuses. Cigarettes also work quite well. The key is to use a material which is fairly slow burning, but isn't likely to go out.
